Alliance vet dispels contagious disease rumors
Published Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 03:20 PM

Dr. Tom Furman of Alliance, one of the several veterinarians treating the animals at the Morrill County Fairgrounds in Bridgeport, says that other than starvation and parasitic infestation, the animals have exhibited no other signs of disease. A Gordon woman claims the horses also suffered from Salmonella Poisoning, Rhino Virus and the Herpes Virus prior to being shipped to the Morrill County ranch. .
But Dr. Furman, in an interview with KCSR Radio in Chadron, maintains that’s not the case.
Furman says that veterinarians have not seen any clinical signs of the accused illnesses beyond starvation and parasites.
Furman did say the horses have the potential to be exposed to the contagious diseases because they were on no other vaccination or health program, but he sees no reason why they won't recover.
Morrill County Sheriff John Edens says that without the help from the veterinarians, students, the Morrill County Dispatch staff, Bridgeport P.D., Box Butte County Sheriff's Office; the Nebraska State Patrol, the numerous volunteers; and the businesses and individuals who have made donations or provided trailers, panels, hay and time the rescue effort would not have been as successful as it was.
