Farm Bill Raises Status of Ag Research
Published Friday, August 29, 2008 at 06:50 AM
The implementation of the new farm bill will include changes in the status of agriculture research. The bill gives the Research, Education and Economics division of USDA a new name – the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Under Secretary Dr. Gale Buchanan told Agri-Pulse’s Sara Wyant – as head of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture he will become the department’s Chief Scientist.

The new National Institute should be on line no later than October of 2009. It will still work with university, state and regional programs on research, education and extension services. But, according to Buchanan, the new agency will raise the profile of USDA research, placing it on the same level as the National Institutes of Health, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Science Foundation.
