Energy Debate Moving, But Where

Since Republicans in the House began their protests on the energy issue, House Democrats have begun to squirm a bit. Not so much from the energy issue, but from the pressure they are feeling from their constituents as they work for reelection. The energy issue is at or near the top of the issues being talked about.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, in the Democrats’ weekly radio address, said the party's still-in-the-works energy plan will consider opening portions of the Outer Continental Shelf for drilling, with appropriate safeguards, and without taxpayer subsidies to Big Oil. The plan also calls for the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio says Pelosi's new effort appears to be another flawed plan that will do little to lower gas prices. Observers say it is unlikely that an energy package can pass both houses of Congress this year. Democrats hope that a larger Democratic majority next year will put an energy bill over the top.
