September is National Honey Month, and this year the National Honey Board is urging consumers to explore the many diverse uses of honey. Uses that even extended to the recent 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. There, some gymnasts were reportedly using honey on their fingertips to provide a better grip in "hanging" events, such as the parallel bars and the rings.

But, more popular uses include: in beverages as a sweetener; various food toppings; it’s a substitute for sugar; and did you know honey is used in a wide variety of beauty products. Also, for centuries, honey has been used as a home remedy to help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with a common cold. A recent NHB-funded study offers scientific evidence that honey is an effective cough treatment.

Still, the bee industry continues to work on finding out what caused Colony Collapse Disorder, which because a problem during 2007. The National Honey Board has funded a project that focused on developing a new delivery method for treatment of Varroa mites. The study looked for and found natural alternatives to using pesticides.
