CHAPMAN - Congressman Jerry Moran today announced that President Bush has declared 46 Kansas counties, including Dickinson and Riley, a federal disaster area following extensive damage as a result of severe weather that occurred from May 22 through June 16. The declaration provides federal assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for disaster relief and emergency assistance. "The President's declaration means many Kansas communities will receive help with cleanup and recovery efforts," Moran said. "This assistance is welcome news to many Kansans as they continue removing debris from the severe storms." Today's emergency designation is for Categories A through G under the Public Assistance program, which authorizes FEMA to provide assistance to state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities at an 75 percent federal and 25 percent local and state cost-share. Counties eligible for Public Assistance include: Barber, Bourbon, Butler, Brown, Chautauqua, Cherokee, Clark, Clay, Comanche, Cowley, Crawford, Decatur, Dickinson, Edwards, Ellis, Franklin, Gove, Graham, Harper, Hodgeman, Jackson, Jewell, Kiowa, Linn, Logan, Mitchell, Montgomery, Ness, Norton, Osborne, Pawnee, Phillips, Pratt, Republic, Riley, Rooks, Rush, Saline, Seward, Sheridan, Smith, Stafford, Sumner, Thomas, Trego and Wallace. The Small Business Administration (SBA) has also announced that low-interest disaster loans are available to residents and businesses whose property was affected by severe weather on June 11. Individuals in Clay, Dickinson, Geary, Marion, Marshall, McPherson, Morris, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, Riley, Saline, Wabaunsee and Washington Counties are eligible for the loans. Disaster loans are available in different increments for homeowners, renters, businesses and private non-profit organizations to repair or replace damaged or destroyed primary residences, personal property, real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other business assets. Information is available by contacting SBA's Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955 or online at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance. The application deadline for property damage is August 19, 2008.
