U.S. Pork and Beef Exports Continue Expansion
Published Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 04:50 AM
The U.S. Meat Export Federation reports U.S. red meat exports continued their strong showing during the first quarter of 2008. Pork exports led the way with an increase of 41 percent. Exports of the “The Other White Meat” totaled more than 366 thousand metric tons. During the same quarter beef exports, including variety meat, increased 29 percent and totaled nearly 118 thousand metric tons.

The U.S. Meat Export Federation’s manager of research and analysis, Erin Daley, says - the weak U.S. dollar is certainly a factor, and gains are being made despite the growing shortage of shipping containers to take our exports to overseas markets. Daley cautions - that issue may become more significant in the second quarter, particularly as the South Korean beef market begins to heat up.

Japan continues to be our number one pork export market followed by China. Mexico and Canada continue to be our top two beef destinations.
