Published Saturday, November 07, 2009 at 11:57 PM
The Nebraska Wind Power 2009 Conference will be held in Kearney at the Holiday Inn Convention Center November 9-10. There will be over 60 speakers, 20 workshops, and 35 exhibitors. The quality and diversity of the state and national leaders presenting is outstanding. Governor Dave Heineman will keynote the Conference Monday noon and Larry Flowers, National Technical Director of Wind Powering America at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado will keynote Tuesday noon.

Larry Flowers has been described by wind advocates as “a national treasure” for his national leadership in wind education and development. In addition to leading the U.S. DOE & NREL Wind Powering America program, he has the technical expertise and experience to answer wind related questions with authority.

Two experts, Bob Zavidil the lead consultant and Clint Johannes the Nebraska Power Association (NPA) lead, will present the preliminary findings of the $1 million dollar NPA-NREL Wind Integration Task Force. This study is by far the most detailed and comprehensive study ever done to examine the costs and options for the addition of substantial amounts of wind energy to the Nebraska grid.

Three experts, Jay Caspary the Director of Transmission Development for the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), Pat Pope VP and Chief Operating Officer for NPPD who represents Nebraska to the SPP, and Nancy Jackson, Executive Director of the Climate and Energy Project who leads a regional effort to help citizens better understand and work with the SPP will discuss the broad set of dramatic new realities and considerations that come with Nebraska joining the Southwest Power Pool.

Two sets of parallel workshops will include: wind basics, the status of wind development in NE, the Rock Port, MO community wind project, county planning and zoning issues, transmission issues, wildlife considerations, net metering, small wind, renewable energy funding opportunities, state wind legislative update, wind project financing, wind related economic development, Wind For Schools program report, new NE wind training programs, and last year’s most popular landowner issues in wind development.
