As the state faces a sharp uptick in the number of H1N1 flu cases, officials are urging summer camps to take special precautions. NET Radio reports that for nearly two months, after the first case was confirmed in late April, the number of new cases per week averaged less than a dozen, and never exceeded 17. Last week the number of cases was up 29 and this week it's up another 38, to a total of 148. Dr. JoAnn Schaefer, the State's Chief Medical Officer, says officials are tracking the spread of the disease. Schaefer is urging summer camps, where the flu could spread, to have plans and training in place to minimize exposure, including the possibility of sending campers home if they have symptoms. When campers get sick, they should be isolated for at least seven days after symptoms began or 24 hours after symptoms conclude, whichever is longer.
