The expansion of YMCA in the south-central Nebraska comunity of Lexington was formally announced Thursday at a news conference held at the Lexington Public Library. Tod McKeone, YMCA of Lexington Branch Chairman, says a two-year process of research and planning led to the the start of the Founders Campaign in June which set a minimum goal of raising $500,000 in order to start programs, hire staff and look for temporary facilities. They are working in partnership with the YMCA of the Prairie in Holdrege. McKeone says the ultimate target goal is $750,000 and he announced the initial capital campaign, in just under 3 months, has raised more than $580,000.
McKeone says up to this point, the campaign has targeted businesses and some private donors. Organizers now want to make a broad-based appeal across the entire community. McKeone says organizers hope to hire a program manager in November and finalize plans for a temporary facility. He says the campaign ultimately wants to have a stand-alone facility. But he says YMCA is more than bricks and mortar, it's about programs for all ages. These programs don't replace or duplicate existing programs, but rather collaborate with other programs to fill gaps and needs in the community.
Those who want to contribute to the Founders Campaign can contact the Greater Lexington Foundation or contact Amy Biehl-Owens, YMCA of Lexington Founders Campaign Chairman. Or they can contact Tod McKeone at his Lexington law office. YMCA's currently serve 15 communities in Nebraska with Lexington being the 16th community to benefit from a YMCA presence.
