PENDER, Neb. (AP) _ Thurston County residents will celebrate ``All-Heritage Day'' next Oct. 12 _ a day known to most others as Columbus Day. The county Board of Supervisors voted this week to rename the holiday as a compromise with those who view Columbus Day as an unhappy reminder. Last year, the board considered a proposal to create a new holiday called ``Native American Day.'' The northeast Nebraska county has a mixed population. About half is Native American, including members of the Omaha and Winnebago tribes. Board Chairwoman Teri Lamplot said Friday that it's not the job of county government to begin separating its residents based on ethnicity. She believes the compromise is fair and maintains the number of paid holidays the county observes.
