The Smithfield Road in Gosper County reopened December 10, 2008 after being closed since late May following extensive rainfall. Highway Superintendent Mike Snyder says it caused shoulders to slough-off in some places and the pavement to sink in others.
Adams Construction Company of Arapahoe was the general contractor for the road repair with assistance from BSB Construction of Curtis and Siel Construction of Franklin. The project required the removal of some 130,000 cubic yards of material along with the machines to handle it. Due to costs and limited funding, the damaged asphalt portions were replaced with gravel. The final cost was around $270,000. Snyder is urging all drivers to use caution and obey the 50 mph speed limit on the road.
