Cigarette Likely Caused Fatal Fire
Published Friday, February 22, 2008 at 05:32 PM
A cigarette was the likely cause of an Auburn apartment fire that killed a woman and injured her husband. Nemaha County Attorney Louie Ligouri says that while an official determination from the state fire marshall is pending, the investigation indicates the fire early yesterday morning was started by a cigarette in the living room. Killed in the blaze was 45-year-old Shawnee Hammer. Preliminary autopsy results show she died of smoke inhalation. Her husband, Gene Hammer, was critically injured and remains hospitalized today. Ligouri says both victims smoked.
