A 52-year-old Stanton man was seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a one-vehicle accident that took place about six miles northeast of here.

Randy Phillips was injured when his eastbound vehicle left a county road and went airborne, striking a tree, said Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger.

Phillips' vehicle then plunged about 20 feet into a water-filled ditch. He was extricated from the water by Stanton rescue personnel and transported from the scene to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City by medical helicopter, Unger said.

Alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident. Phillips was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated, Unger said.
