OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ U.S. Attorney Joe Stecher is among the eight applicants vying for a western Nebraska judgeship being vacated by a judge voted off the bench. With his appointment as U.S. attorney for Nebraska drawing to a close, Stecher said Friday, western Nebraska seems a good place for him and wife to land. He says he has family ties to the Sidney area. A March 12 hearing in Gering will gather more information on the candidates. Gov. Dave Heineman ultimately makes the appointment. Other candidates are: Vance Haug of Chadron, Joel Jay of Chappell, Paul Schaub of Sidney and David Wilson of Kimball, Gregory Jensen of Ord, Michael Piccolo of North Platte and Derek Weimer of Gering. Kristine Cecava was voted off the bench in November. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP-02-20-09 0927CST<
