Dozens of Humphrey and area firefighters spent the wee hours of Sunday morning battling a blaze that consumed a downtown Humphrey automobile restoration business.

About 45 volunteer firefighters from Humphrey, Platte Center, Creston, Lindsay and Madison responded to an 11 p.m. Saturday fire at Veik Specialties near the intersection of Main and Third streets, Fire Chief Joe Hubenka said this morning.

Hubenka said the building was unoccupied when the fire was reported by a couple of passers-by. There were no injuries.

The downtown building was occupied by Veik Specialties, owned by Lauren Veik. Hubenka estimated damage to the building and its contents at $250,000. Two vehicles that were being refurbished were inside the building and were destroyed in the fire. Flames from the blaze were fed by the tar roof and flammable liquids stored in the business,
