By Dave Schroeder

Dr. Jessica Meeske, a pediatric dentist from Hastings, was honored at the University of Nebraska Medical Center's commencement on Friday with the J.G. Elliott Award. John Reinhardt, Dean of the College of Dentistry, says Meeske "has done many things for public health and for advancing the oral health and dental health of children, in particular, throughout Nebraska especially central and even western Nebraska".

Dr. Meeske founded and is clinical director of the Sonrisa Dental Project, which provides basic dental services for underserved children. She has also been a public health policy advocate across the state. Dr. Reinhardt also notes her support of the community fluoridation bill that was recently approved by the Legislature.

The J.G. Elliott Award is given annually in memory of Elliott, a former Scottsbluff resident who served on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents for 20 years until his death in 1974.
