Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale encourages Nebraskans to fly the U.S. flag during the Fourth of July holiday to show their patriotism. Gale says it's especially important because of the amount of discontent and conflict around the globe. Gale says, "the U.S. flag is the iconic symbol of our values of freedom, liberty and democracy." Gale says, "Independence Day also is a time to reflect on the heroic sacrifices of U.S. military personnel from the time of the Revolutionary War to the present." He says, "our thoughts and prayers are with our troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq."
As a free public service, people may arrange with Gale's office to have U.S. and Nebraska flags flown at the State Capitol throughout the year in recognition of individuals, accomplishments and special occasions. The flag to be flown must be delivered to Gale's office with an explanation as to why the flag is being flown. A flag flown at the State Capitol is returned with a keepsake certificate signed by Secretary Gale detailing the date and purpose of the flight. More information on the flag service can be obtained by contacting Gale's office (402) 471-4070
